AP English 12 consisted of reading as many Bildungsroman novels as we could in 18 weeks. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, was be the most recent book that became significant to me. There were numerous lessons that one can learn by reading the book, and symbolism that allows one to look at the world in a different way. In the book the narrator is “Invisible” and this is mainly because of the color of his skin. Invisible is usually defined as unable to be seen. Symbols were the major key that allowed this book to become significant to me. There is always someone who is trying to be over someone and have power. Dr. Bledsoe and Mr. Norton both had power but misused their power and later allowed the Invisible Man to realize they were not who he thought they were. I faced a situation at my job that allowed me to connect to the power theme. After moving to Harlem, New York the Invisible Man had the opportunity to get a job and he began working at the Liberty Paints plant. The supervisor was an older black man who had been working at the plant for so long he had gained a little “power”. As a young adult going into the real world Invisible Man opened my eyes. Life is lived differently by different people. The Symbols, the relation that I could make with power and allowed me to really draw close to the narrator in Invisible Man. Throughout high school, I was the Invisible Man, and I did not allow that to affect my drive to learn and do the best I can be. My Harlem is now Auburn University at Montgomery; I was sent here to complete a task and I will make sure I do just that. There may be bumps in the road and everyone will not be here for you just as the narrator learned, but I know I can do it. Many people are “Invisible”, but it is your choice to let that prevent you from prevailing or pushing/ striving to be the best you can.
